GAC Endorses Obafemi Hamzat as APC Consensus Candidate for 2027 Lagos Governorship Race
The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement followed a high-level meeting of APC leaders held on Monday at the Governor’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reportedly threw his weight behind Hamzat’s governorship ambition.
Party insiders said the decision was reached after extensive consultations among key stakeholders within the Lagos APC, with members of the GAC said to have aligned with Sanwo-Olu’s position in backing Hamzat as the preferred successor.
The endorsement is being seen as a major political development within the Lagos APC, effectively positioning Hamzat as the frontrunner in the race to succeed Sanwo-Olu in 2027.
Hamzat, who currently serves as deputy governor, has long been regarded as a central figure in Lagos politics and a key player in the state’s governance structure.
With the backing of both Governor Sanwo-Olu and the influential GAC, Hamzat’s emergence as the APC’s consensus choice is expected to shape early political calculations and succession dynamics ahead of the 2027 governorship contest in Lagos State.
