Young Man Killed as Curfew Relaxation Sparks Fresh Violence in Jos
Tension flared again in Jos, Plateau State, on Wednesday following the relaxation of the 48-hour curfew imposed after the deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba.
The curfew, adjusted to run from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., was meant to allow residents resume daily activities. However, the decision was followed by renewed unrest, as mobs and suspected hoodlums attacked motorists and pedestrians in different parts of the city.
According to reports, a young man was killed near the University of Jos Permanent Site after he was assaulted by a mob.
Several vehicles were also vandalised, with windscreens shattered in areas such as Terminus, Bauchi Road, Farin Gada, Tina Junction, Chobe, and around the University of Jos axis.
The violence forced many businesses to shut down, with banks and shops remaining closed amid fears of further attacks. A shop owner at Terminus Market, Joy Bature, expressed concern, saying residents were too frightened to open their businesses due to the uncertainty.
Meanwhile, the University of Jos Alumni Association has called on the state government and security agencies to strengthen security presence, particularly around campuses, student hostels, and major roads.
