Breaking News: Buhari’s Remains Arrive Katsina from London, Burial to Hold Today in Daura
The remains of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, have arrived in Nigeria from London ahead of his burial later today in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The body, which departed the United Kingdom earlier in the day, was received at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport in Katsina by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, senior government officials, and members of Buhari’s family.
The late president, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82, died in London following a brief illness. His death was officially confirmed by the Presidency shortly after, sparking a wave of national mourning across Nigeria and beyond.
The arrival of the former president’s body marks a key moment in the ongoing state-led farewell process. The casket, draped in Nigeria’s green-white-green flag, was conveyed with full military honours amid a heavy security presence and a solemn atmosphere.
Vice President Shettima, who had earlier led a federal delegation to London, joined President Tinubu and other dignitaries to pay last respects at the airport reception.
Buhari, a retired Major General and former military Head of State, ruled Nigeria as a civilian president between 2015 and 2023. He is remembered for his anti-corruption stance, infrastructural projects, and controversial medical trips abroad.
His burial, in accordance with Islamic rites, is expected to take place later today in Daura, with family members, political allies, traditional rulers, and global dignitaries in attendance.
President Tinubu had earlier declared seven days of national mourning and ordered that flags be flown at half-mast across the country.
