Breaking News: Edo Governor Okpebholo Retracts Threat Against Peter Obi — Says Comments Were Misunderstood
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has retracted his controversial threat against Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, clarifying that his comments were misunderstood and not meant as a personal attack.
The clarification follows widespread backlash over Okpebholo’s statement on Friday, where he appeared to condemn Obi’s recent visit to Benin City. Speaking during the reception of new defectors into the All Progressives Congress (APC), the governor linked Obi’s presence to a spike in violence and questioned the source of ₦15 million allegedly spent during the visit.
“That man who says he has no ‘shishi’ came and dropped ₦15 million. Where did he get it from? After he left, three people were killed. For this reason, Obi must not come to Edo without security clearance,” Okpebholo had said.
The statement sparked strong criticism from Labour Party senators, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the OBIdient Movement, and concerned Nigerians, who described the comment as provocative and undemocratic.
In a statement released Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Governor Okpebholo clarified that Edo State remains a safe and welcoming place for all Nigerians, regardless of political beliefs or affiliations.
“Governor Okpebholo respects all leaders, including Peter Obi. His administration is one of inclusion, not division,” Itua stated. “The governor’s message was centered on standard protocol and public safety not a personal threat.”
He added that while political figures are free to visit the state, they are expected to follow proper security procedures to ensure peace and order.
As Edo prepares for upcoming elections, the governor’s initial comments and subsequent retraction reflect the high political stakes and heightened sensitivities in the state’s charged atmosphere.
