Breaking News: Labour Party Moves to Expel Peter Obi Over ‘Anti-Party Activities’ — Accuses Him of Dual Allegiance
Crisis is deepening within the Labour Party (LP) as its National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, announced plans to expel the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, over alleged anti-party activities and dual-party loyalty.
Speaking during a live interview on Channels TV on Tuesday, Arabambi revealed that the Labour Party’s National Executive Council (NEC) would soon convene to recommend Obi’s expulsion a decision that would be ratified at the party’s next national convention.
“Let me make it very clear. We are convening a NEC meeting where he (Peter Obi) will be expelled,” Arabambi stated, alleging that Obi was previously suspended before further “compounding his offense” by aligning with another political party.
Arabambi accused the former Anambra State governor of engaging in what he termed “dual-party allegiances” a breach of the Labour Party’s constitution. “You don’t go and join a political party and at the same time put your leg in another political party… They have been able to deceive him to their side and there he shall remain,” he said.
He further slammed Obi for allegedly associating with a political coalition he labeled the “yahoo yahoo coalition,” insisting that such behavior is unacceptable within the Labour Party. “It is not within his right to say he’s still a member of the Labour Party while hobnobbing with that group. We are not going to accept that.”
Obi, who garnered over 6.1 million votes and placed third in the 2023 presidential election, is reportedly aligned with a faction of the Labour Party led by Senator Usman Nenadi a rival bloc to the Arabambi-backed faction led by Julius Abure, which controls the party’s national secretariat.
The Abure-led faction had earlier suspended Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, and other high-profile members over alleged anti-party conduct.
As the internal wrangling escalates, political observers are watching closely to see whether Obi, a prominent figure in the country’s emerging third-force movement, will be officially pushed out of the party under whose platform he gained massive youth support and nationwide momentum in 2023.
