The Chief of Staff to the President and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has described President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove fuel subsidy as an act of “extraordinary statesmanship” rather than that of a politician concerned about winning the next election.
Gbajabiamila, who spoke at the 2025 Southern Summit of former legislators held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, stressed that Tinubu’s administration had, from its inception, made it clear that it would not shy away from difficult reforms necessary to reposition the country.
According to him, subsidy removal was one of the most courageous policy decisions in Nigeria’s recent history, reflecting Tinubu’s resolve to prioritize long-term national interest over short-term political gains.
“President Tinubu’s decision was not about the next election; it was about the next generation,” Gbajabiamila stated.
The summit brought together former lawmakers from across the South to deliberate on governance, national reforms, and the role of experienced legislators in strengthening democracy.
