Breaking News: Senate Confirms Tinubu Nominee, Professor Joash Amupitan, as New INEC Chairman

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, President Bola Tinubu’s nominee, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The confirmation followed a comprehensive screening session held in the Senate Chamber, during which lawmakers grilled the nominee on key issues relating to Nigeria’s electoral process.

Professor Amupitan, a respected academic and legal scholar, responded to all questions posed by the legislators before being asked to take a bow and leave the chamber, with assurances that the Senate’s final decision would be communicated to him.

After his exit, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele moved a motion to restore all floor privileges earlier suspended for the screening, which was seconded by the Minority Leader and approved by voice vote.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio thereafter put the confirmation to a voice vote, which was unanimously supported by the lawmakers.

Announcing the result, Akpabio declared: “The nomination of Joash Ojo Amupitan for appointment as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission is hereby confirmed.”

With his confirmation, Professor Amupitan is set to take over the leadership of INEC, where he is expected to strengthen electoral integrity and implement reforms in line with the Tinubu administration’s vision for credible elections.
