Oyegun Kicks as Edo APC Demands Repayment of N150m Alleged Debt
The Edo chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded that John Odigie-Oyegun, former national chairman of the party and ex-governor of Edo state, repay over N150 million allegedly owed in loans and accumulated membership dues.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the party claimed that the liabilities were incurred during Oyegun’s years as a member and leader of the APC, including his tenure as the party’s pioneer national chairman.
According to the Edo APC, the alleged debt comprises unpaid membership dues and loans advanced to Oyegun at different times for party-related activities.
The party insisted that the demand was part of an internal accountability process and not politically motivated.
“These obligations were incurred over the years and must be addressed in line with the party’s financial records and principles of accountability,” the statement read.
However, Oyegun was said to have kicked against the demand, dismissing the claims as baseless and politically driven. He reportedly maintained that he does not owe the Edo APC any such amount and questioned the timing of the allegation.
The former governor has yet to issue an official public statement, but sources close to him described the claim as an attempt to smear his reputation within the party.
The development comes amid ongoing realignments and internal tensions within the APC in Edo state ahead of future political contests.
Efforts to reconcile aggrieved factions in the party are ongoing, as party leaders at the national level seek to maintain unity ahead of forthcoming elections.
