ADC Crisis: Abbo Accuses Opposition Coalition of Betrayal Over Party Positions
Ishaku Abbo, senator representing Adamawa North, has attributed the ongoing leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to alleged betrayal and unresolved internal disagreements following the party’s recent restructuring.
Speaking on the matter, Abbo revealed that a prior agreement had been reached between the opposition coalition and members of the party’s legacy structure to ensure fair representation across all geopolitical zones.
According to him, the arrangement was designed to integrate legacy members into the evolving party framework by allocating key positions to them.
“The agreement made with the legacy party was to cede certain positions to them from each geopolitical zone so that they can be part of the larger ADC,” he explained.
Abbo disclosed that as part of the agreement, Nafiu Bala was to be appointed National Vice Chairman for the North-East—a position he noted was lower than Bala’s previous role as Deputy National Chairman.
However, the lawmaker alleged that the leadership under David Mark failed to honor the agreement.
“During the formation of the David Mark-led National Working Committee, the new leadership reneged on the earlier agreement to make Bala National Vice Chairman North-East and instead installed Babachir David Lawal in the position,” Abbo stated.
He further claimed that Bala rejected an alternative offer to serve as Zonal Financial Secretary, describing the development as a turning point in the crisis.
“At this point, he started plotting how to bring the whole roof down,” Abbo added, suggesting that the fallout from the disagreement has significantly contributed to the instability currently facing the party.
