Gunman Injures 16 in Turkey School Attack
At least 16 people were injured on Tuesday after an 18-year-old former student opened fire at a vocational high school in Siverek, authorities have confirmed.
The attacker, reportedly armed with a shotgun, stormed the school and fired at students and staff before retreating into the building, triggering panic across the परिसर.
Governor Hasan Şıldak said the victims included 10 students, four teachers, a canteen worker, and a police officer. While several of the injured received treatment locally, five—comprising students and teachers with more severe injuries—were transferred to a hospital in the provincial capital, Åžanlıurfa.
According to the governor, security forces swiftly evacuated the school as emergency responders arrived at the scene.
“The attacker is dead. The school has been evacuated, and a full investigation is underway,” Şıldak said.
Authorities disclosed that the suspect, believed to have been born in 2007 and a former student of the institution, was eventually cornered by police special operations units inside the school premises. He later died at the scene.
Eyewitness footage circulating online showed students fleeing in panic, with some escaping through windows as security personnel secured the area. Initial reports during the incident had raised fears of a possible hostage situation amid the confusion.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though preliminary reports suggest the suspect may have had a prior dispute with another student before returning to the school armed.
Officials say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
