Obi, Kwankwaso Set to Dump ADC for NDC Amid Fresh Opposition Realignment
Fresh indications have emerged that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso are set to dump the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in what could mark a major realignment within the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to reports, both political heavyweights are expected to formalise their exit from the ADC as early as Monday, following growing internal tensions and legal uncertainty surrounding the party’s leadership structure.
The planned move was disclosed by Buba Galadima, a close ally of Kwankwaso, during the Obi-Kwankwaso Movement Unity Summit in Abuja, where he told supporters to prepare for a major political announcement on Monday.
Galadima said the crisis rocking the ADC had made it difficult for key opposition figures to remain in the party, adding that Obi and Kwankwaso would soon unveil the platform on which they intend to pursue their 2027 ambitions.
Although the NDC has yet to make a formal declaration on the development, party insiders say talks with Obi and Kwankwaso have reached an advanced stage, with only final details left before their official entry into the party.
The development is believed to be part of a wider opposition recalibration, driven by unresolved leadership disputes in the ADC, internal coalition tensions, and mounting concerns over the party’s readiness for the 2027 electoral cycle.
Political observers say the expected defection could significantly reshape opposition dynamics, especially if Obi and Kwankwaso succeed in building a fresh alliance under the NDC ahead of the next presidential contest.
