Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing a deviation from the founding principles of the party.
In a resignation letter dated July 14 and made public on Wednesday, Atiku described his decision as painful but necessary, lamenting what he termed a departure from the ideals that once defined the PDP.
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter read.
The former Vice President, who served two terms under the PDP-led administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo and was twice a presidential candidate on the party’s platform, expressed gratitude for the opportunities the party afforded him.
“As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” he wrote. “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku extended his best wishes to the PDP leadership and members, expressing appreciation for their support over the years.
In a dramatic twist following his resignation, all local government and ward chairmen of Jada Local Government Area in Adamawa State Atiku’s political stronghold have also withdrawn their membership from the PDP.
Sources close to the former Vice President have hinted that he is expected to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that could reshape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
