‘I Chose Stability’: Tinubu Explains Why He Signed the Electoral Act
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said he signed the amended Electoral Act to avoid plunging Nigeria into political turmoil.
The President explained that his decision was guided by the need to maintain stability in the country’s democratic process and prevent uncertainty ahead of future elections.
Tinubu noted that while there were debates and differing opinions surrounding aspects of the legislation, refusing to sign the bill could have created tension within the political system.
According to him, signing the Electoral Act was necessary to ensure that the nation’s electoral framework remains functional while giving room for further improvements through legislative processes.
The President added that safeguarding the country’s democratic institutions remains a top priority of his administration.
The amended Electoral Act is expected to shape the conduct of future elections in Nigeria, including preparations for the 2027 general elections, as stakeholders continue to debate reforms aimed at strengthening transparency and credibility in the electoral process.
